What is the Aviva Future Leader Programme?

A 2-year training and coaching programme designed for the future leaders of Aviva’s key independent brokers. The programme will blend face-to-face events, external mentoring and teamwork and will provide the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to run a successful insurance broker business.

Phil Bayles, UKGI Intermediaries MD

After gaining a Management Science degree at Warwick University Business School, Phil worked in the Motor industry with the AA, before moving to the outsourcing sector with Motability Financial Operations. Phil joined Aviva in 2002 initially as Partnerships Director looking after our strategic relationship with Santander.

In the last 15 years Phil has undertaken a number of trading and distribution roles in the broker, and partnerships channel. In April 2013 he was appointed into the role of Intermediary and Partnerships Director, leading the trading, sales and branch network across the UK. Phil was appointed as Intermediaries MD in January 2017, with responsibility for sales and distribution across Aviva’s intermediary business.

Karen Jackman, Director of Regional Brokers

Karen’s induction into insurance was a summer job, pre taking a place at university to do Accountancy. She loved the job and the people that she worked for, and never left, instead gaining her ACII and completing her MBA via the Open University.

In her time at the legacy companies and now AVIVA Karen has had a variety of roles from underwriting to claims to sales, financial reporting to governance to audit and has worked directly with customers, Brokers and Partners.

In the last 8 years Karen has worked in the broker business, leading our Distribution Strategy and Propositions before taking on the additional responsibility to lead our Sales team and broker marketing, therefore leading and implementing the end to end solution for our regional brokers.

John Nutter, Aviva Learning and Development Manager

John Nutter joined Aviva in 1995 as mortgage indemnity claims handler. Over the last 22 years, he has held a variety of roles in Claims, Underwriting, Financial Insurance Portfolio Management and Sales, across multi distribution channels in both the Partnerships and Broker sectors. For the last 13 years he’s worked with Brokers as a CIPD qualified Learning & Development Manager, leading a team of Learning & Development Consultants who deliver both Learning & Development and Business Optimisation solutions that provide tangible results for both Aviva and our customers.

Dan Wall, Aviva Learning and Development Consultant

Dan Wall joined Aviva in 2001 as a sales executive, after spending some time as a sales coach he developed a passion for training, and for the last 14 years has been a CIPD qualified learning and development consultant delivering professional training to Aviva, its corporate partners & Brokers. He now specialises in business optimisation and Learning and development solutions designed to enhance and grow business for Aviva and our Brokers.

Andrew Scott, Andrew Scott Business Consultancy Ltd

We’re delighted to be joined by Andrew Scott as co-host and co-creator of the Aviva Future Leader Programme.

He brings significant experience to the initiative having worked in the insurance industry for over 35 years. Andrew started his own business, Aston Scott, early in his career in 1993. The business went from strength to strength, even completing his first acquisition less than one full year after founding the company. Organic growth and development was vital in the early days and Andrew gained a reputation in the market for building successful development teams. He also designed his own in-house new business development training modules, always making himself available to his employees, no matter what level of seniority they held. That ability to relate to people of different backgrounds has proved very valuable to him during his career.

When asked what one thing he would tell his 30 year old self now, Andrew says, he wished he knew then, what he knows now. All the energy and enthusiasm that he had back when he started his business was essential, but having some real knowledge and experience behind him, perhaps in the form of a mentor, would have made the path so much easier.
