Will you join the fight against the 21st century’s biggest killer?

Of the 300,000 of us working in insurance, over half will be affected by dementia – either directly or through a loved one.  On Thursday 7 November 2019, our industry will once again unite for Insurance United Against Dementia’s (IUAD) Day of Giving. 

What is Insurance United Against Dementia (IUAD)? 

IUAD is a movement created by the Alzheimer’s Society – the UK’s leading dementia charity. It’s championed by leaders from across our industry and the goal is to raise £10 million to fund vital research to take on the 21st century’s biggest killer.

With no cure for dementia, and limited treatments available, now’s the time to make a commitment not only to dementia research, but also to the way in which we view and treat dementia, both as individuals and a sector.

IUAD is committed to increasing awareness of what dementia is, as well as offering support for you and your colleagues if you’re one of the millions of people affected by dementia.

The Day of Giving 

The 7 November is an opportunity for brokers and insurers alike to unite in fighting for a common cause. The Day of Giving is an initiative that aims not only raise vital funds for the research into the care, cure, cause and prevention of dementia, but to raise awareness across our industry of the support they can offer to those affected. 

Last year, over £70,000 was raised throughout the insurance industry. Teams and individuals throughout Aviva will be getting involved as we challenge ourselves to raise at least £15,000 this year. How will you and your colleagues get involved this year? 

What can you do?

Whether it’s dress downs, dress ups, bake sales, raffles, team quizzes, three-minute challenges or something more adventurous – It all helps. Here’s some handy fundraising ideas from IUAD:

  • Three-minute challenge - Every three minutes, someone in the UK develops dementia. Why not take on a three-minute challenge of your choosing to combat dementia. You might choose to get as many high-fives as possible, hop for the full three minutes, or take on a hair-raising leg wax challenge. Whatever you decide on, get your colleagues to sponsor you for your amazing feat!
  • Tea and talk - Tea and talk allows your staff to take some time out to learn our five key messages to help them better understand how dementia affects people. Hold a bake sale to accompany the session and ask for donations for sweet treats.
  • Dress Downs - An easy way to raise money is to put on a dress down day for your company. Extend the invite to your clients and avoid suits for the day! A £2 donation can go a long way if everyone gets involved.
  • Back to the floor - How would your firm's senior team cope with going back to the floor? Would they shine on reception? Flourish in the canteen? Could your leaders excel in a different role?
