What is the driving force behind the Future Leader programme?

The concept was developed after listening to broker feedback and watching the market shift towards consolidations and regional branch closures. It’s evident that there’s been a decreasing talent pool and lack of succession candidates from which independent brokers can recruit. We’ve seen that family run firms are looking to their children to be the future of the business, but recognise at times that there’s a potential lack of technical knowledge, business acumen and the key skills required to run a successful broker business. With all that in mind - we launched our Aviva Future Leaders Programme designed specifically for individuals from independent brokers who have the potential to be the broker principals of the future. 

What’s it all about?

The Aviva Future Leader Programme is a mixture of training, coaching and mentoring, covering all the key skills, knowledge and behaviours required to run a successful broker business. Our programme takes the learners on a 2-year journey which helps them to get to grips with the subject matter. We’ve adopted a rounded approach, exploring all aspects of life in an insurance broker; from business planning to practical team management, financial and board room skills.  

Tackling situations brokers are facing day to day, the programme is designed to reflect real issues in a timely topical nature. This enables our programme content to be brought to life with real case studies and discussions - recently we covered a session on GDPR ahead of the legislation coming into effect in May 2018. 

Karen Jackman, Director of Regional Broker Intermediary, said, “Our course doesn’t just focus on the individual managerial skills but what it actually takes to become a leader within the independent broker environment”. 

Behind the Aviva Future Leader Programme is a commitment to provide supportive learning environments.  Delegates are trained in bi-monthly workshops by a Learning and Development team and our programme partner Andrew Scott Consulting. The programme also includes elements of blended learning and homework accessed via the Aviva DevZone.  

Plus, in addition to the Learning and Development team, the delegates benefit from direct access to the Future Leader mentors who provide one to one advice, coaching and guidance. As subject matter experts, we have specifically chosen our mentors as examples of leaders who have “been there and done that” and are key individuals in the industry including; Alex Always, Compass and Ashwin Mistry OBE,Brokerbility.  Finally, our Aviva sponsors Phil Bayles and Karen Jackman, complete the Aviva Future Leader Team.
