Our Claims Fraud Intelligence Team

How do we detect and investigate organised commercial claims fraud? How do we protect our customers?

Our Claims Fraud Intelligence Team are Aviva’s response to organised claims fraud across motor, liability and property with a particular focus on investigating cash for crash scams. We’re really proud of our team of 24 experts in Norwich and Bishopbriggs.

To give an idea of scale of the problem in our industry, in 2016, Aviva declined claims worth over £25m linked to fraud rings. The problem is not going away, either, as Aviva is currently investigating more than 3000 suspect whiplash claims linked to organised fraud. Our focus will always be to pay honest claims fairly and quickly, and look after clients who need our support.

We’re currently seeing a lot of claims from fraudsters who are deliberately slamming on their brakes at the entrance to roundabouts. This causes the innocent driver to collide with the other vehicle. The fraudster then submits an inflated and bogus claim. This isn’t fair on your genuine customers.

We actively challenge activity of organised crime groups by working with the police to make sure that those responsible are held accountable. In 2017 we repudiated £16m worth of claims for organised fraud, with 2350 organised bodily injury cases under investigation. We’re passionate about delivering the right outcome for our genuine customers and we want to deter future fraudsters.

Our work has been recognised by the rest of the industry by winning Fraud Intelligence Team of the Year twice in the last 5 years at the Insurance Fraud Awards – this is something that we’re really proud of.
