Focus on: Commercial Schemes
In April’s issue of the Loop we heard from our newly appointed Head of Commercial Schemes, Chris Hill, on his plans and anticipated challenges of his new role. Now 6 months in, we picked up with Chris to find out more about how the first half year has gone and looking to the future.
Q. When we spoke to you earlier in the year you were excited about working with a new team. How has that been and what have you learnt?
A. When I came into the role, I knew we had a very strong commercial schemes team with a great depth of knowledge and experience, and they certainly haven’t disappointed. Every single one of the team have worked extremely hard to ensure that we are working hand in hand with our existing scheme brokers towards achieving growth and in identifying the right new business opportunities. There’s still plenty of hard work ahead but we’re making tremendous strides forwards and I’m confident that I have the right people around me who are real experts in their field.
Q. You were keen to get out of the office and visit schemes brokers, have you been able to do so?
A. Im glad to say I have been able to meet up with many of our schemes brokers, and have plans to continue to meet more going forward. For me there’s no better way to really understand a broker’s business and their specific needs than to sit down and talk to them openly and work collaboratively on plans, products and services. At our Key Partner Conference I spoke to many of our key brokers and was delighted with the feedback on our schemes offering. It’s great to see that brokers know we are ‘open for business’ and they are keen to do business with us.
Q. What has been the highlight of the first 6 months?
A. There’s been many, but I must say it was fantastic to be voted number one for schemes by brokers in the Datamonitor survey. It’s always good to be recognised for the work that we do, but when it’s voted for by our brokers we know we must be doing something right. At the same time it’s great to see that reinforced by the growth of our new business numbers over the last 6 months. That’s not only a true reflection of support from the broker market but something I was keen to see happen on coming into the role.
Q. As we look ahead to the remainder of 2014 and into 2015, what is your vision for our commercial schemes business?
A. In simple terms, the plan is to build on the tremendous work over the last 6 months and focus on growth. The first half of 2014 has seen us build up some strong momentum, but also highlights the potential to do more. We want to work closer with brokers to develop strong working relationships and schemes that meet the needs of customers in a fast developing world.
Our schemes business has come a long way from where we were this time last year and now the key for me and my team is growth, for both existing and new schemes. When I came in to role I said I wanted to write more new schemes and that hasn’t changed.
