Important information concerning Australian customs and immigration strikes

Australian customs and immigration staff are planning a number of strikes commencing Thursday 24 March and are planned to last for several weeks. This could affect flights into and out of Australia.

The advice is to be prepared for delays and ensure you leave enough time if you are travelling through any of the following international airports; Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Darwin, Adelaide, Cairns or Gold Coast

Further details of flights affected can be found here http://www.border.gov.au/News/Pages/travellers-clients.aspx

Under the standard policy terms, if your flight is delayed after you have checked in when departing the UK for more than 12 hours, you can claim a benefit under the ‘Delayed departure after check-in’ section (£25 for each full 12 hours you are delayed), if the delay lasts for more than 24 hours you can abandon your trip.

If you have purchased the optional Airspace Closure cover, you can cancel your trip if the strike results in closure of the airport or airspace and you are unable to make alternative arrangements within 24 hours of your planned departure. If you are unable to return home we will provide £100 for each full 24 hour period you are unable to return home.

If you wish to cancel or amend your travel plans you should speak to your travel provider.
