Cracking down on Fraud

You’ve told us that fraud is a huge issue in the industry, especially at claims stage and that insurers could do more to combat it. We’ve taken your feedback on board and we’d now like to share with you an exciting advancement that we’ve made in our fraud detection capabilities, which helps us and you the broker to identify fraud early on at underwriting stage.

What have we done?

We’ve introduced a fraud screening tool called Hunter, hosted by Experian, which is designed to help us detect possible fraud by looking for data matches on policies and claims for both new policies and renewals.

How does it work?

Policy and claim transactions are loaded into the system to allow us to screen for fraud post-policy inception, post mid-term adjustment and post-claim. Our dedicated team, led by Anne Green, Head of Underwriting Fraud at Aviva, can then investigate fraud referrals and cancel or void proven or suspected fraudulent policies. Addressing the issues around underwriting fraud means we'll be faster at settling genuine claims and will reduce the opportunity for organised criminal activity.

When will these improvements take place?

This system will be rolled out gradually for our broker Personal Motor and Van business from May 29 with further roll outs planned to other products in the future. We’ll keep you updated of our progress along the way.

What are the benefits to me, the broker?

In our recent broker survey, one of you commented that insurers and brokers are on the same side and should not be in this to catch each other out. It’s about sharing our knowledge and collaborating in order to identify anyone who is attempting to abuse our profession. We whole heartedly agree and this is exactly what we’re doing.

By investing in processes like this, we can work together to demonstrate to fraudsters that, as an industry, we’re cracking down on fraud.

If you have any more questions about our new fraud process, you might find these FAQs useful.

And if you missed it, here’s another chance to watch Head of Claims Fraud and Loss Prevention at Aviva, Tom Gardiner, talk more about trends in claims insurance fraud, as well as who the typical fraudsters are in this short video.
